ABOUT THE TEAM!
Jan Gould. Teacher. Dog Lover.
KPA-CTP, UW-AAB
Jan is consumed by training and behavior.
Whether it’s a new science research paper, a conference on aggression, a webinar on working with high drive dogs, puppy socialization or producing her own 15 episode podcast (click here to sign up) on emotions in dogs and how they drive your dog’s behavior, she is likely to be learning from it.
As a student of life, she is always looking for more education opportunities to expand her knowledge and information she shares with her students.
Her educational and training journey has included dogs, alpacas, goats, guinea pigs, donkeys, beta fish, gold fish, chickens and horses. She has also spent two weeks working with undomesticated animals, such as sea lions, seals, Bottlenose dolphins, Rough Tooth dolphins and tortoises!
She believes one can never know too much and as we learn more, we discover just how much more there is to learn. Jan has been teaching both dogs and their humans, as well as learning herself for over 15 years!
Dogs and their people fascinate Jan. She has worked with children and their dogs through 4-H, teaches agility from foundation through high-level competitors, works with young puppies and their 1st time dog people as well as seasoned dog families who find themselves with dogs who have challenges they have never encountered.
Jan also works with humans whose dogs are having difficulties with other dogs and humans or other worrisome behaviors such as fence fighting, resource guarding, over protective of their homes, lunging at cars or other moving things.
Each dog and family is unique, deserving individual thought and care when developing training plans to build a trusting bond that leads to both the dog and the humans living their best lives.
Jan does just that by focusing on positive training methods, taking into account what can relieve the stressors for both the human and the dog.
When life is less stressful, it becomes more joyful.
And isn’t that what you wanted when you got your dog?
“Thank you for being a great teacher, no wonder you were recommended by a friend!”

Sparrow
2/23/09 - 5/2/24
Sparrow is Jan’s 15 year old Miniature American Shepherd.
She has been key in Jan’s development in the love of training and understanding dogs.
Sparrow has been such an important part of Dog Barn Training, appearing in many of our training videos and working as a “helper” dog with many dogs who bark, lunge, growl, pull or otherwise display behaviors under the “reactive” label.
Dog Barn Training may not have existed without her, she is a big reason Jan loves dogs so very much!
We hope you love her dedication to training in the videos as much as we do!
HOBO
Hobo is Jan’s 8 year old Australian Shepherd. He started out as Jan’s husband’s farm dog and quickly became our demo dog when COVID hit and shut everything down in 2020.
We went on-line like so many trainers did during lock down and needed a dog who wasn’t a training “ringer” like Sparrow.
Hobo was it.
You see, Jan’s husband doesn’t formally train his dogs and neither does she!
So April 2020, Hobo as an almost 6 year old went to school!
He brought his goofy sense of humor with him, rolling around on the artificial turf on his back as Jan explained the skill to be taught. He makes a great demo dog!
Boy, oh boy, is he enthusiastic! Turns out he LOVES working and learns quickly if you can ignore the silliness.
Though one to not take anything seriously, he is superb at working with dogs who bark, lunge, and growl at other dogs.
Coming soon two new members of the team
Grayson joined the Dog Barn team in January of 2022.
He brings a variety of skills besides his innate connection to dogs. Grayson is in charge of computer technology from the website to social media, while he studies the science of learning and behavior.
Look for him and his Labrador puppy, Dexter, in classes as assistants or as participants as he furthers his knowledge of behaivors.
Dexter is the Labrador Retreiver memeber of the Dog Barn Canina Team.
He brings leaps (literally) of joy to our classes as a participant and as a demo dog. He also brings his star appeal to various training videos.
He have high hopes for Dexter to continue to be the star of our online content.
